Eremite Games and Hooded Horse’s dark fantasy roguelike city builder Against the Storm is now available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch (compatible with Switch 2), and Xbox (currently included with Xbox Game Pass).
Against the Storm tasks players with rebuilding civilisation in the face of the apocalyptic Blightstorm. Rather than building a single city, the goal here is to build a prosperous network of settlements populated by diverse fantasy races—including humans, harpies, foxes, beavers, and lizards—each with different specialisations and needs.
Being a roguelike, getting wiped out by the storm is inevitable. But a system of permanent upgrades, resources, and meta-progression gives you more to work with on subsequent expeditions into the wilderness. Hundreds of modifiers and six distinct biomes ensure each outing poses its own unique challenges and possible rewards.
The console release comes with a revamped UI designed with controllers in mind, ensuring a smooth experience for newcomers and a comfortable style of play when you’re lying on the couch or playing in handheld mode. While the Switch version is compatible with Switch 2, there’s no dedicated Switch 2 Edition, so don’t expect to be able to use the Joy Con 2’s mouse mode.
Against the Storm‘s first expansion, Keepers of the Stone, is also available. It adds the new Frog species, two new biomes (Coastal Grove and Ashen Thicket), and a variety of new buildings, rewards, orders, and music tracks. Keepers of the Stone is available as a separate DLC purchase for digital versions of the game, but comes included in the physical Switch and PlayStation 5 releases.
Against the Storm costs around $40 on console (give or take some slightly different rounding on each platform), and has a 10% launch discount on Switch and for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Keepers of the Storm costs approximately $20, and there’s also a Complete Edition bundle for $53.95 (PlayStation) / $49.99 (Switch and Xbox). It’s also currently included in Xbox Game Pass.
