Farming Simulator—the long-running agricultural sim that typically has realism as a defining quality—is getting an official Mega Drive release. It’s the kind of announcement that makes you double check the date, but no, it’s not April 1, and this is indeed a real thing.
Farming Simulator 16-bit Edition is a collaboration between GIANTS Software and Strictly Limited. It puts a retro spin on the series, with hand-drawn pixel art and the isometric view typical of ’90s city builder and management games. The Collector’s Edition of Farming Simulator 25 included a retro-styled Farming Simulator for PC as a bonus, and the strong response it got prompted GIANTS to explore a proper retro version for actual 16-bit hardware.
The cartridge version of Farming Simulator 16-bit Edition is made for Sega Mega Drive / Genesis consoles (or unofficial hardware compatible with Mega Drive carts), and is coming out in three varieties: standard, Limited Edition, and Deluxe Edition. The Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition come with an exclusive green cartridge, will only be available from the Strictly Limited store, and are limited to 500 copies each. The Deluxe Edition also includes a cartridge holder, CD soundtrack, and Deluxe Edition box. The standard edition has a black cartridge and will be available through select retailers like Amazon.
I’m not sure a new Farming Simulator for Mega Drive in 2025 is something anyone would have expected, but here we are. It’s certainly something that anyone with a fondness for that era (guilty) will want to check out.
