Kia kaha te Reo Māori! This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), an annual event to champion te Reo Māori. Legend Story Studios, the Tāmaki Makaurau-based creators of the Flesh and Blood trading card game, have found their own way to celebrate the language: a special Reo Māori card with a Matariki theme.
Hinewhitu, Hautipua is an alternate version of Pleaides, Superstar, with gorgeous borderless art by MJ Fetesio, based on the Matariki constellation. The card text is a Reo Māori translation of the Pleaides, Superstar card—so the effect is the same, but with a card that puts Māori language and culture in the spotlight.

“With the inclusion of Pleiades in Super Slam, the LSS team crafted a special Reo version of the hero whose name is shared with a significant celebration in the Māori calendar, Matariki,” wrote the Flesh and Blood team in a Twitter post unveiling the card. “In celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, LSS are excited to share this unique aspect of Aotearoa on an international scale.”
Hinewhitu, Hautipua is a Marvel rarity card in the Super Slam set, which releases on September 26, and will also be available as a special promo card through activations in Aotearoa. Pre-release events for Super Slam take place from September 18 to 25.
