Anyone wanting to get an early look at Square Enix’s upcoming “foam party shooter” Foamstars (and help test the game’s servers) will get the chance soon, with an open beta weekend announced for the last weekend of September.
The “Foamstars Open Beta Party” will be available on PlayStation 5 from 2pm on Friday, September 30 to 7.59pm on Monday, October 2 (NZDT). The beta will feature eight playable characters (Soa, ΔGITO, Tonix, Jet Justice, Mel T, The Baristador, Rave Breaker, and Pen Gwyn) and two 4-v-4 game modes:
- “SMASH THE STAR”: Compete in a frantic battle where the winning strategy changes as the match progresses. In “SMASH THE STAR”, each team must battle it out to secure seven knockouts on the opposing team. Once this is achieved, the best player is chosen to be the “Star Player” and becomes the key to victory! To win the match, teams must defeat the opposing team’s “Star Player” while also protecting their own!
- “HAPPY BATH SURVIVAL”: A battle between two teams comprised of two “infield” players and two “outfield” players. Victory is earned by defeating both opponent “infield” players, while “outfield” players support and provide defense for their teammates!
As a thank you gift, everyone who joins in the beta will get an exclusive cosmetic item for Soa when the full game launches next year.
Foamstars is a online multiplayer shooter where foam is the weapon of choice—not just for drenching your opponents, but also for building terrain, creating obstacles, and speeding around the map. There’s clear Splatoon inspiration, but with a hero shooter approach to character design and some innovative touches to set it apart Nintendo’s ink-fuelled feuds.
Foamstars is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in early 2024, although it looks like the beta is PS5 only.
