Grandia, Parappa 2 join PlayStation Plus Game Catalog

The latest wave of PlayStation Plus games is now available, with some noteworthy classics among the list for Premium subscribers: Grandia and Parappa the Rapper 2.

Anyone who was playing RPGs in the ’90s will likely remember Grandia. It’s one of the pinnacles of the genre’s Saturn/PlayStation era, a sprawling adventure with plenty of heart and humour, charming characters, and a combat system that put some clever twists on the turn-based standard of the day. It got an HD remaster for Switch and PC a few years ago, although the remastered presentation leaves something to be desired. So having the option of playing the PlayStation version on a modern console is a welcome alternative.

When Parappa the Rapper 2 landed on PlayStation 2 in 2001, it didn’t quite leave the same mark as its predecessor—after all, Parappa the Rapper pretty much invented the rhythm action genre as we know it, and introduced one of PlayStation’s most lovable mascots in the process. But it’s still a uniquely wacky and enjoyable game from one of PlayStation’s most creative eras, and worth checking out.

Both games are part of the Classics Catalog, a library of classic games included with PlayStation Plus Premium memberships. It includes emulated versions of PS1, PS2, and PSP games, as well as assorted remasters.

The new update also means additional titles for the PS Plus Game Catalog, available for Extra and Premium members. Highlights here include Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, Capcom’s cult favourite action RPG; first-person puzzler Superliminal; Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi for the historical strategy crowd; and throwback JRPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising.
