This year marks the 25th anniversary of Dynasty Warriors 2, the game that laid the foundations for the whole “1 vs. 1000” musou genre. To celebrate, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force released a teaser for what’s next for the series.
First up is a large-scale DLC for Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the newest game in the series that came out earlier this year. The game carved a bold new direction for the series, and was largely successful in overhauling the combat and action-strategy that defines the series. There’s no information about what this DLC will entail, but given that the base game doesn’t cover the full entirety of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, an extended story covering the remaining chapters seems plausible.
The other tease is for “a remastered version of a classic title in the series”. Again, there’s no information beyond that statement, so predictions about which title is getting revisited is just speculation. My money’s on Dynasty Warriors 4 or Dynasty Warriors 5, being two games that aren’t readily available on current platforms but are generally well-regarded.
Koei Tecmo has also set up a commemorative website for the 25th anniversary, including a series timeline and some quotes from IP Producer Akihiro Suzuki and Head of Omega Force Tomohiko Sho. Technically speaking, Dynasty Warriors hit its 25th anniversary a couple of years ago—the first game in the series was a 3D fighting game released in 1997. But Dynasty Warriors as we know it today started with Dynasty Warriors 2 in 2000; it’s differentiated with a different name in Japan, but the Western release just rolled with “Dynasty Warriors 2“.
But now I’m just nerding out over technicalities. This year is the 25th anniversary of Dynasty Warriors as we know it, and it looks like there’s exciting stuff ahead.
