While the gaming world is looking ahead to the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct next week, there’s still plenty of life left in the “old” Switch. That was the focus of another Direct this morning: a showcase of 30-odd games making their way to Switch in the near future.
The full list is below, but first, some highlights. We got a new trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, introducing a new world to explore, Samus’ new psychic powers, a tease of a new black and red power suit, and confirmation of a release this year on Switch 1—it’s not the Switch 2 exclusive that many people assumed, though a cross-gen release is probably a safe bet.
We also got a look at Witchbrook, the magic school life sim from Chucklefish (developer of Starbound and former publisher of Stardew Valley). Witchbrook was first unveiled in 2017, garnering plenty of attention for its vibrant pixel art and “Harry Potter meets Stardew Valley” concept, but it’s been quiet for years—the kind of quiet that makes people wonder if it’s actually still in development and if it’s ever coming out. Well, it’s coming out this year, and it’s looking lovely.
As is often the case with Directs, there were a couple of shadow drops. One of Square’s lesser-known PSX-era RPGs is back in SaGa Frontier 2, a host of Disney villains get their moment in the spotlight in Disney Villains Cursed Cafe, and Rift of the Necrodancer gets a Switch release alongside a Celeste music pack.
Lastly, Nintendo used this Direct for a couple of non-game announcements. “Virtual Game Cards” provide a new way of sharing digital games between two consoles, and can also be shared with friends on a time-limited basis. And for folks who need a daily dose of Nintendo Direct, the new Nintendo Today! app on Android and iOS delivers just that.
Anyway, those are just highlights from a jam-packed presentation! Here’s the full list of featured titles:
