When I first saw Lego 2K Drive, I was amped. After the chaotic brilliance that was the Forza Horizon 4: Lego Speed Champions DLC, an entire Lego Brick Forza game was all I wanted. It turns out Lego 2K Drive wasn’t quite as Forza Horizonish I hoped for, but it is still damn delightful.
More kart racer than arcade driving game
I know it’s weird to expect a Lego game to be more serious, but let’s not forget I had unrealistic expectations because of the Horizon 4 DLC. The races have serious emphasis on drifting corners and you smash crates to get weapons to fire at your opponents. I was expecting a slightly more serious racing game, but the kart racer I got was unexpectedly great.
The controls feel good but not perfect. Racing controls can be tough to describe the exact vibes, but you know it when you feel it. A certain amount of this is that weird feeling of when you are in a car that handles like a kart. The good news is it’s good enough that you adjust to it pretty quickly.
Lego doing Lego things
The most awesome part of the game, which never gets old, is the vehicles rebuilding. As your vehicle changes terrain, like switching from road, to offroad, to water, the vehicle rebuilds as you drive. A small animation ensues and you are seamlessly in the new vehicle. The novelty never wears off.
As with anything Lego, you can customise to your heart’s extent. You earn currency which lets you get new minifigs, cars etc. Of course you can spend real life money if you want to take away the grind. Annoyingly, as the game goes on, you do need to do a lot more grinding than I expected to get leveled up enough for the later races, but at least the game is fun to grind.
The other Lego-y thing is the biomes. The initial world had me nervous as it wasn’t that large, so I was delighted when I unlocked more. As you go on, you visit the farming desert area, a haunted theme park type area, and a wooded mining area. Hopefully with some DLC they release more biomes. I was hoping it would be one massive map that changed the themes, but this is good enough and certainly provides a potential launching pad for a bigger and better sequel.
A great first Lego 2K Drive game
Everything about this game was vibing with me. An open world kart racing game with all of the Lego silliness and fun attached. Hopefully a sequel makes it one big seamless open world, but for now this is still a fun, damn excellent start, that is well worth your time.
This game ain't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.
