Byte-Sized Review: Firewall Ultra PSVR2 Review

The OG PSVR had a surprisingly wide selection of games by the time the PSVR2 rolled out with some solid FPS on offer. With the upgrade to PSVR2 that back catalog was lost so PlayStation has brought their shooter Firewall: Zero Hour forward to PSVR2 as Firewall Ultra.

If you have played Firewall: Zero Hour then you basically know what you are in for. The maps, as far as I experienced, are the same. The game modes are basically the same but with a slightly better offline mode, it’s more or less the same game.

The big upgrade here is with the graphics and controls. The game looks absolutely fantastic and the lighting has come leaps and bounds in relation to the original game. The change to the controllers helped with the better tracking as well. There are some design choices like reloading with a button that feels odd, but it does help with speed. You win some and you lose some.

If you haven’t played before, the general gist is that you have two teams. One is trying to complete some tasks like hacking a laptop, and your opponents try to stop it. It’s not overly complex, but it is fun as hell. The biggest issue the game has, and it’s a weird issue, is interacting with the world. The shooting is fun, but given the immersive nature of the new controllers, I would have liked to interact with the world a lot more.

On the whole, I am happy enough with Firewall Ultra. It has brought a fun game across that works pretty damn well. Firewall: Zero Hour came a long way with post-launch updates, so hopefully this one does too. But on the whole it’s a solid, fun-enough shooter that looks amazing in VR.
