Logitech G522 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Headset Review

There are so many gaming headsets to choose from these days. From a cheapie at under $100 to elite headsets at around $900, you can spend as much money as you want. Well, at $330, the new Logitech G522, Lightspeed Wireless Gaming does ask some serious questions on why you would spend more than that.

There are a few things that I look for in a headset to make it top tier. These are comfort, battery life, and sound quality. Playing with the G522 I have to say it’s ticking all those boxes.

    Comfort and style!

The headset uses some soft memory foam on the cups, which is super soft on your head. Whether I was wearing glasses or not, it never felt like it was pushing on my ears in any way. The super soft touch is assisted by the fact that it’s super light 290 grams. Then, to make sure you can wear this thing for hours, the cups themselves are nice and long, so they will fit all ear types. I couldn’t believe how comfortable these things are to wear.

When it comes to style, there is a simplicity to its style that I love. Simple matte black covers a simple yet chonky design that looks slick as hell. The RGB is an elegant panel that goes around where the headband meets the earcups. They fade and flash and look super cool and chill.

    Functionality

When it comes to functionality, there are two main things I look for. How easy is it to use, and how well does it work without tweaking any settings in software?

Out of the box, I plugged in a dongle and started using it for work meetings. The mic quality and sound quality were both commented on for how great they sound. They sounded better than my enterprise-grade headset, both for me and the people I was talking to. So that’s a big win. Plugging the dongle into my PS5 Pro, and the beautiful music in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was overcoming me. It seriously sounded so much better than I could have expected.

The buttons on the headset are nice and simple: an on/off switch, a Bluetooth button, a volume slider, and a mute button. Simple, and what you need. The only thing I wasn’t the biggest fan of is that the mic is a separate piece. You can plug it in easily, and it sits sturdily, but you can’t swing it up to move it out of the way. It’s either plugged in and around your mouth or unplugged. This isn’t necessarily a major issue for most people, but it’s a pain in the butt for me.

One minor thing is that you can’t turn off the lighting without one of the apps. There is a Windows G Hub app that is easy enough to use and a phone app that is easier to use. Here you can turn off the RGB or change the colours of the lights, but also tweak the sound to your preferences.

    Battery life and connectivity

The headset offers up to 70 hours of battery life, but this depends. With the RGB on, it drops to around 30 hours, and then things like using Bluetooth can also drop the battery life. Using the dongle and with the lights off, I got a week’s use out of it, so that sounds accurate. The problem is, it looks so pretty with the lights. Having said that, at 30 hours, you still only need to charge it every few days, unless you sleep with it on. So in short, the battery life is exceptional.

As mentioned, the headset offers a dongle and Bluetooth options, as well as plugging it in using the USB charging cable. This means it works with almost every device, every device except Xbox, and that’s an Xbox issue, not the headset issue. With Bluetooth, it easily connects to your phone, your Switch, or most devices. Using the dongle, it easily connects to your PC or PS5. It’s super easy to use and super flexible.

    Should you get one?

If you are in the market for a new gaming headset, the Logitech G522 Lightspeed is a hard one to look past. At its price, this headset is way too good. The sound quality and mic quality alone make it a banger; the additional style and comfort make it a fantastic purchase at $330.

    9 Hell Yeah!

The Logitech G522 Lightspeed is now my favourite gaming headset, and given the price that is a feat!
