The first Luigi’s Mansion is joining Nintendo Classics – Nintendo GameCube for Switch 2 on October 30, just in time for Halloween.
Luigi’s Mansion was a launch title for Nintendo GameCube in 2001, putting Mario’s easily-spooked brother into the starring role of a comedy-horror action adventure game. Armed with a flashlight and the Poltergust 3000 vacuum cleaner, Luigi needs to explore a haunted mansion and rid it of the various ghosts that call it home. The game had a bit of a mixed response at launch, but developed a cult following over time, and was followed by two sequels: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for 3DS in 2013, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 for Nintendo Switch in 2019. Dark Moon got a Switch remaster last year in the form of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
Between this release and backwards compatibility for Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD and Luigi’s Mansion 3, all three games in the series will soon be playable on Switch 2. This will be the first time the whole series has been available on one console.
GameCube classics are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, and only available with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription, which costs NZ$69.95 per year. Luigi’s Mansion will the sixth game in the GameCube line-up, joining F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SoulCalibur II, Super Mario Strikers, and Chibi-Robo!.
Another four games have been announced as future additions, but don’t have release dates yet: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and Super Mario Sunshine. Nintendo will presumably continue to drip feed new additions over time, the same way they have for the other Nintendo Switch Online classics libraries.
