The timing is impeccable. Bethesda Game Studios announced today that Fallout 4, after 10 years on the shelf, is getting a next-gen update for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The most interesting facet being that this very update was announced almost 2 years ago in October of 2022. Which was when the Fallout franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The article stated at the time to “prepare for the future! A next-gen update is coming to Fallout 4! Coming in 2023, this free update will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC systems, including performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content!”
And then December of 2023 came about, along with a tweet from the official Fallout account:
With that, it left fans wondering just when the heck this update was going to come. If at all. Especially following the controversial launch, and continued management of the game studio’s latest title, Starfield. The television series was barreling toward its launch on Prime Video, which had fans excited that this update may coincide with its release. But then the show started changing its release date, which meant it became even harder to keep track of. If the show was changing dates, then how could this update keep up?
It didn’t need to.
Because Bethesda confirmed today that it now has a release date.
April 25th, 2024.
A free download will be heading to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Including native applications for the current generation of consoles, it adds Performance and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. This means PS5 and Series X|S players can finally experience up to 60 FPS and increased resolutions in the wastelands!
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will also receive a free update with stability improvements, login and quest fixes.
PC players also get their own free update for Fallout 4. Players can experience the game on their next-generation PC with widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, as well as fixes to Creation Kit and a variety of of quest updates.
They’ll also be adding free Creation Club items, such as Enclave Remnants, Makeshift Weapon packs and Halloween Workshop items so your settlements can stay spooky all year round!
So if you’re coming down from the high of the Fallout TV show, then Fallout 4 will be ready for you to make your way back to the Commonwealth. And the end of the world hasn’t looked any better.
