A big shift in Magic The Gathering has been that this year the Standard format is going to be more prominent. With that in mind, I figured what better way to try out Standard than go down and compete with people at the best LGS around, Bea DnD.
What the hell is Standard?
Standard is a constructed format where you can use cards from certain sets. Previously, it had been up to 2 years worth of sets, but at the moment it is up to 3 years. You build your deck, come along and compete.
Your deck must be 60 cards, and you will usually have a sideboard which is cards you can swap in or out between matches depending on how your deck is performing. Or in one case, switching out for some removal spells, so after losing to my Haughty Djinn’s, you remove them for the next 3 games and smash me. I did not take a sideboard and I regretted it dearly,
Are all cards from the last 3 years legal?
Nope, there are supplementary sets like Ravnica Remastered and Universes Beyond sets like Lord of the Rings which aren’t legal. Even in the main sets, there are cards that aren’t legal as they may have been way too overpowered.
What’s the Standard Showdown?
There are some competitive Standard qualifying events coming up, but this one is the much more casual version. Basically, just like their sealed events, you go down and play in a mini-tournament. Just with your pre-prepared deck. It is awesome.
Should you go compete in a Standard Showdown at Bea DnD?
Absolutely. I was nervous that this event might be a bit more serious, but it was as fun as any events at Bea DnD have been. The community is fun as hell to play with, the Bea DnD peps running the event are as awesome as always, and it was just a cool new way to experience MTG. Use those stacks of cards you have collected, build a deck, and go have some fun.
Fun event, incredible store and community! Get your deck ready and head down to Bea DnD!
