If you have followed my MTG Newbie series at all, then at this point you will know I am loving it. My favourite kind of event are sealed ones, especially ones that use the prerelease boxes. Everyone gets a bunch of packs, makes their decks and plays against each other. It’s fun.
When I saw a new event called the Chaos Sealed Event, I was so damn keen to go have some chaotic fun.
What is a Chaos Sealed Event?
This one is the Summer of Magic Chaos Sealed Event where each player got a box containing:
A draft booster from The Brothers’ War, a draft booster from Phyrexia: All Will Be One, a draft booster from March of the Machine and a draft booster from Wilds of Eldraine. Then there was a Jumpstart 2022 Booster and a random Collector Booster from one of the sets that the draft boosters are from.
So randomness, mechanics from all the sets, absolute chaos. As usual you get an hour to make your deck and this is the first time I have ever used the allotted time. So many strategies, so many possibilities.
Since a Jumpstart booster is one colour, I decided that was going to be one of the colours I used. In hindsight that was a mistake. I grabbed all my green cards, then selected a colour that would work with them, Then I crafted a deck with cards I thought would work together and chose some jumpstart ones that worked.
Looking back I should have used the Jumpstart deck and supplemented it, or not worried about it at all. Ah well, next time.
Was it any fun?
Holy shit yes. Not because Bea DnD is awesome. The random mechanics, random cards, and different combinations I had never seen were awesome. Both in my hand and in others hands.
Opening up packs from different sets was so much fun and then trying to figure how they could work, again so much fun. Though stressful in the last 10 minutes of deck building.
Best of all, thanks to the chaos, I won my first games. It had the usual best of three structures for each match, and with my previous best being a draw (one all followed by running out of time) this time I won two matchups! As I have said, even losing, these events are fun. Do you know what else is fun? Winning for the first time.
Then there were the giveaways. Instead of a promo card or three, the winner took a beach towel and there were spot prizes of magnets and sunglasses. The sunglasses were the weirdest things ever, with the ones I got being a bike, but there was all kinds of silliness like cocktail glass glasses. Not on theme for Magic, on theme for Chaos.
What about Bea DnD?
I’ve said it before, I’ve said it again and I’ll keep saying it. Bea DnD is an incredible store. The culture, the community and everything about the place is great. There were so many different people sharing their love of magic and genuinely enjoying the chaos of the event. Silly sunglasses everywhere, people enjoying seeing what each other opened, and people enjoying watching the weird card combos play out.
If you are in Te Whanganui-a-Tara or Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai you owe it to yourself to come down and enjoy a game at this amazing store!
Should you check out a Chaos Sealed Event?
God I hope this becomes a regular thing. Sealed events are fun as hell, but Chaos Sealed Events are next level! If it doesn’t become a thing, make sure you check out another sealed event down at Bea DnD, they’re so delightful.
Great Event! Great Store! So much fun!
